INTRODUCING
THE CLASSIC RETREAD BOOTS:
BUILT TO GO THE DISTANCE
If you’ve ever searched “can Blundstone boots be resoled?” or “how to make leather boots last longer”, you’re not alone. More people are looking for ways to extend the life of their footwear — rather than replace it.
The Blundstone Classics Retread boots are designed with exactly that in mind. Built on our iconic Classics Series, this range introduces a practical innovation: a replaceable tread, helping your boots go further, for longer.
What Are Retreadable Boots?
Retreadable boots are designed so the tread — the outer layer of the sole that contacts the ground — can be replaced when it wears down.
With the Classics Retread boots, this means a professional cobbler can renew the worn tread without needing to replace the entire sole. This helps extend the life of the boots while minimising the amount of material used during the process.
Retreading vs Resoling Boots: What’s the Difference?
A common question is: what is the difference between resoling and retreading boots?
While the terms are often used interchangeably, they mean slightly different things.
Resoling boots usually means replacing the entire sole. This can include the midsole and outsole, depending on the construction of the boot and the repair required.
Retreading boots means replacing only the tread, which is the section of the outsole that touches the ground and wears down over time.
The Classics Retread boots are designed for retreading, not full sole replacement. The process of renewing only the worn tread, helps to maintain Blundstone’s inner comfort system and minimise material use.
Can Blundstone Boots Be Resoled?
Many people reach out to us to ask, “can Blundstones be resoled?” or “where can I repair my Blundstone boots?”
Most Blundstone boots are made using direct injection construction, a method known for delivering comfort and everyday reliability. They can be resoled by a professional cobbler; however, depending on the method used, the original midsole comfort system may be altered or replaced during the resoling process. We designed the Retread sole so that only the tread needs to be replaced, allowing the midsole and its comfort system to remain intact. This helps preserve the comfort features Blundstone is known for.
How the Classics Retread Works
The Classics Retread boots feature a replaceable rubber tread designed to be renewed by a professional cobbler when needed.
To make it easy to know when your boots are ready, each pair includes bright green wear indicators hidden within the tread. As the tread wears down, these indicators become visible on the bottom of the boot. When you see the green indicators, it’s time to visit a cobbler.
A professional cobbler will carefully grind away the worn tread sections and apply a new tread, helping prepare your boots for their next chapter. To help protect the midsole and maintain comfort, we recommend replacing the tread soon after the wear indicators start to appear.
Blundstone does not sell replacement treads directly. However, a cobbler will usually have access to suitable universal tread options and can advise on the best replacement for your boots.
How Do I Know When My Boots Need Retreading?
You’ll know your Classics Retread boots are ready for a new tread when the bright green wear indicators begin to show on the bottom of the boot.
How quickly this happens depends on how, where and how often you wear them. Everyday use, walking surfaces, weather conditions, care and storage can all affect tread wear.
As a guide, keep an eye on the outsole. If the tread is wearing low and the green indicators are visible, it’s time to have them retreaded. Don’t wait until the sole is completely worn through to the midsole. Acting early helps protect the structure of the boot and supports long-term wear.
Thoughtful Materials, Built for Extended Wear
The Classics Retread is not just about repairability. It also incorporates thoughtfully selected materials.
Features include:
• Nubuck leather sourced through Silver Fern Farms and Tasman Tanning’s certified Net Carbon Zero program* (excludes lining leather)
• Pull loops with up to 50% recycled content
• Elastics made with natural rubber and up to 63% recycled polyester
Net Carbon Zero leather, by Silver Fern Farms and Tasman Tanning, is New Zealand's first certified, grass-fed, end-to-end Net Carbon Zero leather range. Each hide is drawn from Silver Fern Farms' Net Carbon Zero By Nature™ program, meaning the measured cradle-to-gate emissions associated with finished leather are balanced against the equivalent amount of carbon removals from trees growing on supplying farms. Payments to farmers for these carbon removals are then reinvested to boost further native plantings and biodiversity on New Zealand farms. The result is a boot that brings together timeless design, practical longevity and carefully considered materials.
The Classics Retread: One pair, more wear.
The Classics Retread represents a practical evolution of a much-loved boot. With a replaceable tread, thoughtfully sourced materials and the trusted comfort of the Blundstone Classics Series, this range offers a practical way to get more wear from your boots.
*Certified by Toitū Envirocare to ISO 14067 standards, the leather features full traceability from farm to finished product. The Net Carbon Zero status applies to the nubuck leather used in the upper, not the finished boot. This is an insetting approach, whereby carbon removals occur within the same supply chain that produces the leather, rather than being purchased as external offsets.
